The district of Trastevere can be found to the south of Vatican City along the west bank of the River Tiber. It is filled with narrow, cobbled streets that are great for exploring and walking. At night, the locals and tourists gather at its many restaurants and cafes.
Located to the west side of the River Tiber, Trastevere is well connected to most parts of Rome through its public transport system of bus routes and trams. There are numerous public bus services that run in the local area. Rome Metro’s Tram Line 8 provides a good option if you need transportation for getting out of Trastevere, to access to many of the popular tourist attractions in Rome’s historical district. If you are leaving the capital of Rome, you can find access to the Roma Termini railway station using public transportation from the Trastevere district. This trip would usually take between 30-40 minutes. Or if you were taking a taxi or Uber, you could reach Roma Termini from Trastevere in about 10 minutes, at an expected cost of 20 to 25 EUR.
Trastevere is a great district of Rome to explore by walking on foot. It takes approximately one hour to reach the north end from the south end, and about a 20-minute walk to reach the east side of the district from the west side, at its furthest point. Walking through the historic streets of Trastevere will give you a chance to take in views of the ancient medieval housing, architecture and design, and check out the local shops and restaurants at your own pace.
One of the most popular tourist attractions to check out when you are visiting Trastevere, is Janiculum Hill. This landmark is a public access, open air hilltop terrace, offering panoramic views of Rome. Below its peak, you will also find Orto Botanico di Roma, Rome’s botanical garden, and Fontana dell’Acqua Paola, a marble fountain commissioned by the Pope that is illuminated at night.
You can also visit Villa Farnesina, an art museum featuring the works of major artists, like Raphael. There are several Catholic churches located nearby, including Basilica di Santa Maria in Trastevere, a short walk south of the art museum, and Basilica di Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, its just across from Tiberina Island, another Trasteverian landmark that is popular among tourists, when exploring the local area.
Towards the southwest of Trastevere, you will also find Villa Sciarra, a quiet park, and immediately behind it, Teatro Vascello, a performing arts centre. Near the southeast end of Trastevere, is Porto Portese, a popular Sunday flea market.
There are many great hotels and accommodations located near central Trastevere. Hotel Santa Maria, and Nikis Collection Trastevere are located close to the River Tiber. Grand Hotel del Gianicolo, Domus Monami Luxury Suites, Hotel Parrasio, and Donna Camilla Savelli are all located within a close distance to the Rome botanical gardens, and Janiculum Hill, while Unahotels Trastevere Roma is located in a convenient spot for accessing public transit, near Viale di Trastevere.
The district of Trastevere is centrally located within Rome and easy to reach by public transit, so it is a convenient place to visit it no matter where you are staying.
