Circo Massimo information

Explore the ancient ruins of Italy's largest circus

Circo Massimo (in English, translated as Circus Maximus) is Rome, Italy's largest circus venue. Located next to the Palatine Hills, it was the first and largest Roman stadium ever built. It was used in ancient times for large mass entertainment gatherings and chariot races. Today it is a public park, with free general admission.

Located close to the Rome Metro station

The Circo Massimo is only a short 10-minute walk from the Colosseum, and the historic city centre district. This makes it a convenient area to explore by foot. It is also located nearby to the Circo Massimo Rome Metro station on the Line B metro (blue line), so it can also be a great place to access the public transport network and other parts the city. There are several bus stations nearby, along Via del Circo Massimo and Viale Aventino. These stops service the bus routes 51, 75, 81, 85, 87, and others. Rome Metro single trip passes can be purchased for under 2 EUR, and offer unlimited transfers between metro, bus and tram services.

Alternatively, if you are traveling from the Roma Termini, and wanted to book a taxi or Uber ride to the Circo Massimo, the 3 km trip might be expected to cost on average 20 EUR and take approximately 10-15 minutes.

Walking distance to Rome's ancient historic centre

Located to the west, directly across the street, you will find the Mouth of Truth sculpture, along with the Cripta di Adriano. Nearby, there are also several other attractions as you head north. This is towards the direction of the Colosseum and Roman Forum. In this area you can find Palatine Hill, Domus Severiana, Aula Isiaca con Loggia Mattei, and the Museo Palatino, a popular museum featuring ancient artifacts, statues, art collections, and a great place for families and kids to visit.

If you reach as far north as the Colosseum and the Roman Forum, and travel west along Via dei Fori Imperiali, you will also find several more landmarks in the historical centre of ancient Rome. There are guided tours and sightseeing buses to explore many of these attractions.

There are some great hotels located near Circo Massimo. These include several four-and-five-star rated accommodations.
