The Museo Nazionale Romano (translated into English as “National Roman Museum”), consists of several exhibitions located throughout Rome, Italy. The image shown above is of the site at Palazzo Massimo. This exhibition site can be found on the northern edge of the Esquilino district. It is located directly next to the Roma Termini, Rome’s largest railway station. A second building, the Terme di Diocleziano ("Baths of the Diocletian"), is located close by along Viale Enrico de Nicola, about a 10-minute walk. A third museum is Palazzo Altemps. It is located on the other side of Rome, nearby the Piazzo Navona, in the district of Ponte.
The Palazzo Massimo exhibition is located directly next to the Roma Termini, making the Palazzo Massimo an excellent spot for travelers coming from outside the city to start their tours. Roma Termini station offers regular train service to and from all major Italian cities, and also includes stops for both Rome Metro Lines A, and B. There is also a large bus station located out front.
If you are visiting Palazzo Massimo from another part of the city and want to try and avoid the crowds at Roma Termini, you may want to exit at the nearby Metro Station Repubblica. It is only a short 5-minute walk from the museum. There are also several bus services that make stops at both Repubblica and Termini stations, along Viale Luigi Einaudi and Viale Enrico de Nicola.
It is only a 10-minute walk between the Palazzo Massimo and the Terme di Diocleziano. However, the time to reach the Palazzo Altemps from either of these two buildings is considerably longer. You can expect a trip across the city to take 40-minutes if traveling on foot, or 25-30-minutes if using the Rome Metro public transportation network. If you elect to take an Uber or taxi to get between Palazzo Altemps and Palazzo Massimo or Terme di Diocleziao, you might be able to save yourself some time. This trip could take anywhere between 12-26 minutes depending on the time of day, and cost between 7 EUR to 10 EUR.
There are several great attractions and landmarks to check out when visiting the Museo Nazionale Romano. Nearby to the Palazzo Massimo and Terme di Diocleziano, you will also find Teatro dell’Opera, a 19th century opera house. It is located only 5-minutes away, if traveling by foot, along Via del Viminale in the southwest direction. If you continue heading in the same direction, you will also be able to reach the Palazzo Esposizioni Roma, another exhibition hall and cultural centre.
Also nearby is the Piazza della Repubblica. This is a popular historical landmark for taking photos, and less than a 5-minutes walk from Palazzo Massimo, heading in the northeast direction from the museum. Also, within the Piazza della Repubblica, you will find The Space Cinema Moderno Roma. Built, in 1904, this is Rome’s oldest multi-theatre cinema.
Meanwhile, directly to the south of the Museo Nazionale, is the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. It is a 10-minute walking distance between these two sites. The Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore is one of the four major papal basilicas, and Rome’s largest Marian church.
There are a number of highly rated hotels located nearby to the Museo Nazionale in Rome. To the south of the Palazzo Massimo building, you will find several four-star hotels including the Hotel Diana Roof Garden, Augusta Lucilla Palazzo, and the Best Western Plus Hotel Universo. On the north side of the Roma Termini station and across from the Terme di Diocleziano building, you can also find several more hotel accommodations including the Best Western Premier Hotel Royal Santina, The Independent Hotel, and the Hotel Milani, among others.
The Museo Nazionale in Rome is centrally located and easy to reach by public transit, so it is a convenient place to visit it no matter where you are staying in Italy, even if traveling from outside the local area.
