The Colosseum is a large ancient Roman amphitheatre in the historic center of Rome, Italy. It is one of the largest amphitheatres ever created in history, and remains still standing to this day. It is listed as one of the New 7 Wonders of the World.
The Colosseum is easily accessible for tourists by public transport, using the Rome Metro. There is a bus stop at Piazza del Colosseo, directly in front of the Colosseum’s entrance. Several bus lines make stops here, including the bus routes 75, 81, 87 and 118. The Colosseum is also directly accessible using the city's metro. The Metro Line B (blue line) has a stop at Colosseo station, directly in front of the Colosseum’s north façade.
If you are traveling from Roma Termini, Rome's main railway station, the expected transit time to reach the Colosseum using public transport is approximately 10-minutes. Passes for the Rome Metro can be purchased for under 2 EUR that provide unlimited transfers between all metros, buses, and trams for up to 100 minutes. Longer term passes, that provide unlimited access to the Rome Metro for up to 24-hours, and 72-hours, are also available. These will typically cost you less than 20 EUR.
There are many popular tourist attractions near the Colosseum. Within this historic heart of ancient Rome, you will also find the Roman Forum, Victor Emmanuel II Monument, Musei Capitolini, and across the street, Forum of Augustus. This part of Rome, Italy is one of the most densely populated sites of historical landmarks and monuments found anywhere in the world.
Located nearby, you will also find the district of Centro Storico to the northwest, and the district of Monti, to the direct north. Centro Storico is known for its many popular tourist attractions including Piazza Navona, Trevi Fontain and the Pantheon. The district of Monti is popular among locals for its shops, bars, trattorias and vibrant nightlife.
If you are traveling to Monti, you may also want to check out Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. It is one of the four major papal basilicas, and commonly referred to as the mother of all sanctuaries. Further north you will also find Roma Termini. This is the main railway station serving Rome, with routes offered to major cities in Italy and across Europe.

In this area, you will also find several more highly-rated hotel accommodations including Sant'Erasmo Suite, Hotel Valeri, and Hotel San Giovanni. If you travel west from the Colosseum towards Centro Storico, at the corner of Via dei Fori Imperiali and Via Cavour, you can also find Hotel Romano and Hotel Labelle.
However, since the Colosseum is centrally located and easy to reach, you can visit it no matter where you choose to stay in central Rome.
