Mercati di Traiano is believed to be the remains of what was once the world’s first shopping mall. Located along the Via dei Fori Imperiali, next to Trajan’s Forum, this large site of ancient ruins once featured shops and apartments as part of Trajan’s market. Today, it is a museum that provides insights into what life used to be like in ancient Rome.

If you travel northeast from Mercati di Traiano along Via Panisperna, you will be able to reach Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in 15-minutes on foot. Trevi Fontain is also located close by to the north, reachable by walking in under 10-minutes. Mercati di Traiano is centrally located in the heart of historic ancient Rome, making it a great place to include as part of any tour of the city.
