The Papal Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls is one of Rome’s four major papal basilicas, along with Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, Saint John in the Lateran, and Saint Peter's. It is situated on Italian territory but owned by the Holy See, making it part of the Vatican’s land sitting beyond the walls of the Vatican City. Inside, it features St. Paul’s tomb, apse mosaics and portraits of all the Popes in the Church’s history.
You can reach the Basilica of Saint Paul by taking the Rome Metro Line B (blue line) and getting off at the nearby Basilica St. Paolo station. From the station, it is only a few minutes walk north to reach the main entrance of the church. The transit time from Roma Termini to the Basilica is approximately 20 minutes. There are also several Metro bus lines that make regular stops nearby. Single trip tickets offering unlimited transfers for the Rome Metro typically cost less than 2 EUR. Multi-use day and multi-day passes can also be purchased, usually at a cost between 10 to 20 EUR.
Alternatively, Uber and taxi services can save you some time. If traveling by car, you can reach the Basilica from Rome’s main station in approximately 10-15 minutes. The expected cost for this trip would be close to 20 EUR in most cases.
You can find several other tourist attractions in Parco della Caffarella, located to the east of the Basilica of Saint Paul. These include the Catacombe di San Callisto, a historical landmark featuring ancient Christian burial tunnels, Mausoleo di Cecilia Metella, a mausoleum that has since been converted into an open air museum, and Catacombs of Saint Sebastian, an archaeological museum. The park is about a one-hour walk directly to the east, or it can be reached in 10-15 minutes if traveling by car.
If you travel further south along the Rome Metro from the Basilica, you can also reach the EUR district, in about 25 minutes. This area was created as part of the 1942 World’s Fair. Today it features many popular concert and sporting venues. It takes about 10 minutes to reach by car, when traveling from the Basilica of Saint Paul.
There are some highly rated hotels located nearby Saint Paul’s Basilica. Most of these are found south of the church, closer to the Metro station. Hotel Pulitzer Roma, Hotel Area Roma, and Precise House Mantegna Roma are all four-star hotels within a short walking distance. There are also several bed and breakfasts within the local area.
The Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls is centrally located within Rome and easy to reach by public transit, so it is a convenient place to visit it no matter where you are staying.
