The Terme di Caracalla (translated in English as, Baths of Caracalla) are Rome, Italy’s second largest site of ancient thermal baths. Originally built during the 3rd century, the baths have not been officially used since the 6th century. Formerly one of the 7 Wonders of Rome, they remain a popular source of inspiration for modern architecture, and a popular tourist attraction. Ancient Rome's largest site of public baths, the Baths of Diocletian, have since been converted to house artworks and decorations as part of the Museo Nazionale Romano.
The Terme di Caracalla is easily accessible by Rome Metro Line B (blue line) and is directly across the street from Circo Massimo station. Alternatively, you can travel here by bus, with stops located nearby on Viale delle Terme di Caracalla, and Viale Aventino, servicing the routes 118, 160, 628, 671, 714, and 792. If you are interested in visiting the Colosseum, it is also only a 15-minute walk to the north. The historical centre district of Rome where the Colosseum is located, can be a popular place to join guided tours and sightseeing buses.
Popular nearby attractions include the Circus Maximo. Ancient Rome's largest outdoor circus, it is only a few minutes walk away to the northeast, along Viale delle Terme di Caracalla. On the west side of Circus Maximus, you can also find Giardino degli Aranci, a secluded public garden. The Piramide Rome Metro station is also located nearby, and features the Pyramid of Caius Cestius, an Egyptian style pyramid built for a rich Roman magistrate.
There are several more popular Roman landmarks within a 20-minute walking distance to the southeast of the Baths of Caracalla. These include the Museo delle Mura, Porta San Sebastiano, and Porta Latina.
Popular and highly rated hotels located near the Terme di Caracalla include the Sourire Hotel, Vecchia Roma Resort, and the Corner Townhouse to the west, along Viale Aventino. To the northeast across Viale delle Terme di Caracalla, you can also find Hotel Valeri, Hotel San Giovanni, and La Casa delle Tartarughe. Hotel Cilicia and Hotel Caravel can be found to the south of the Baths of Caracalla.
The Termi di Caracalla is centrally located within Rome and easy to reach by public transit, so it is a convenient place to visit it no matter where you are staying.
