The Musei Capitolini (translated in English as, The Capitoline Museums) are a collection of art and history museums located on the Capitoline Hill. They are part of Piazza del Campidoglio, in the heart of ancient Rome. The museums contain famous artworks from Roman, Greek and Egyptian history, and the Renaissance era.
The Musei Capitolini and the historic centre of ancient Rome can be a great place to explore on foot as there are many popular tourist landmarks close to one another. However, if you are looking to explore other attractions, or coming from beyond the nearby area, it is well connected by public transport.
The nearest metro station from Musei Capitolini is Collosseo station. The Colosseo station runs the Line B (blue line). It is a 15-minute walk to reach the museum from Colosseo station, along Via dei Fori Imperiali. There are also several bus lines which can take you to and from the site of the Musei Capitolini, to almost anywhere in the city. Rome Metro one-way tickets typically cost under 2 EUR and provide unlimited transfers between metro, bus and tram routes. Multiple-use passes, and multiple-day passes can also be purchased, usually at a cost of between 10-20 EUR each.
Musei Capitolini is only a short distance from Roma Termini, Rome’s largest railway station. Roma Termini is reachable in about 15-minutes using public transport, 10-minutes by car, takes about 30-minutes walking, along Via Nazionale. From Roma Termini, you can make connections to other regions in Italy, along with several major cities throughout Europe.
Within the Centro Storico district of Rome, Italy, the area between the Musei Capitolini, the Victor Emmanuel II Monument, Circo Massimo and the Colosseum, offers several popular museums, historic statues, and landmarks for tourists to check out and visit. The Roman Forum is here, along with Palatine Hill, Basilica Julia, and the Temple of Jupiter Optimus Maximus, to name a few.
Also, within 15-minutes, walking to the northwest you can reach Piazza Navona. Also nearby, are the Pantheon and Trevi Fontain. Or, if you are traveling to the east towards Roma Termini, you can reach the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in about 25-minutes walking, or 15-minutes using public transport.
There are a number of popular hotels located immediately to the west of Musei Capitolini, across the street from Via del Teatro di Marcello. For example, HT6 Hotel Rome is a four-star venue, as is Hosianum Palace, Otivm Hotel, and the iRooms Pantheon and Navona. One the other side of the River Tiber, you can also find several highly rated hotels and accommodations in the Trastevere district. These include the Grand Hotel del Gianicolo, Luxury Trastevere, and the Borgo Ripa Urban Travel, located directly along the shoreline.
The Musei Capitolini is centrally located within Rome and easy to reach by public transit, so it is a convenient place to visit it no matter where you are staying.
